What do you look for in a medical school applicant?
Answer: We look for students who demonstrate an ability to handle challenging coursework and have the personal attributes needed to work with people. It’s important for applicants to show that they’ve done well in upper-level science courses, and that they did well in our entrance exam to show that you can handle medical coursework. But most importantly each applicant needs to be as sure as possible that this is what they want to do with their life. That motivation can be demonstrated through academic achievement and also through exposure to clinical medicine and community service.
Does the applicant know what it’s like to take care of someone? Does the applicant have an idea about the advantages and disadvantages of a career in medicine?
What are they typical academic experiences require by NMC?
Answer: All applicants are required to meet the basics of an eligiblity requirement. In addition to meeting the academic requirement, applicants should look for opportunities to demonstrate a range of competencies.
Students interested in medicine are also encouraged to research the wide variety of careers available in the health professions, to discuss the nature and demands of medicine with a pre-medical adviser or health professional, and to ask a lot of questions before embarking on the application process.
Must you major in Science to apply? What are the pre-required courses?
Answer: Yes at least 50% marks in Physics (P), Chemistry (C) and Biology (B), and a minimum aggregate of 50% marks at the XIIth/ A Level or equivalent examination is required for you ro apply into MBBS course.
What extra courses can I take to improve my application?
Answer: To gain experience, applicants should consider volunteering at a local hospital or clinic to gain practical experience in the health profession. A well-rounded sampling of extra-curricular activities or work experiences, both related and unrelated to medicine, will help broaden an applicant’s knowledge and development.
My school uses different course structure than the one recommended by you.
What should I do?
Answer: Kathmandu University, our Parent University has various pathways made out to MBBS in Nepal for international students whose university requirements are different. Sometimes through additional entrance examination, sometimes with equivalence certificate, and sometimes through short Diploma courses; students can gain admissions to our college even if the course structure are different from what we usaully look for.
Do I need to provide recommendation letters?
Answer: No, not necessarily. But if you have any, it will be a bonus.
Do you require official transcripts and/or original documents?
Answer: Yes, we do. Once you apply online through our website, if you receive a letter of admissions, you are required to come for admissions with your original documents and official transcripts.
On what basis are students granted admission?
Answer: Admission criteria are different for National, International and Ministry of Education students. We take all admissions based on merits. National students are required to come through Kathmandu University directly. Their KUMET scores will assign their probability of studying with us. MOE students are directed through KU as well. And International students after application with their own nation’s entrance test results and then interviewed by NMC directly, based on which their admissions are granted.
Will there be an interview? How do you decide who to interview? How many applicants are invited for interview? What is an interview like?
Answer: We receive an average over 300 applicants for just 75 seats. Thus, an interview is a tool we use to evaluate a student’s eligibility and competence. So yes, there is an interview for all National as well as International students. Every applicant who filled out the form and met academic eligibility for an interview. We usually invite up to 20 students a day with interview routine published on the website.
After my interview, how long will it be before I hear from the admissions office?
Answer: The results are usually published on the same day. So students who meet the requirements at the earliest are the ones who get admitted.
Can I stay in the campus before interview?
Answer: We encourage students to come visit our facilities and talk to our faculties and students to know more about NMC. So yes, perspective students are always welcomed to stay the night at campus to experience what NMC has to offer.
When should I submit admission form?
Answer: As soon as you are certain that medicine is your calling, and you want to explore that option with NMC, you should submit your admission form.
When will I find out whether I got into the program?
Answer: Once you pass all eligibility tests and requirements, you will be issued a provisional admissions letter which will mandate you to fulfill your financial obligations. If that is met, you can consider your admissions process into the program complete.
What if I don’t get in the first time I apply?
Answer: Sadly that could be real possibility for most of the applicants. However, if it really is your passion, giving up is not an option. You have various other colleges in Nepal under KU that might still have a place for you. While most of the students do choose to go abroad for their studies if they don’t get admission in Nepal, it is always recommended to carry on studying and striving for the opportunity that will set your life’s path in motion. How much does Medical Education cost?
Answer: The academic fees are subject to changes every year and are set primarily by Kathmandu University. The fees also vary between National, International, MOE and Administrative seats. To have an idea about the fees for you in particular, please submit an application and have our admissions department reach out to you directly within 48 working hours.
How much does accommodation cost?
Answer: Yes, the accommodation are a separate cost that is incurred during your stay at NMC. We mandate all students admitted in our MBBS course to stay on campus. There are variety of options available in terms of accommodation at NMC. Please check out the rates and facilities included by visiting our accommodation page.
What is the expenditure on food going to cost me?
Answer: NMC deoes have two on-campus cafeterias that provide hygience food but we leave our students to decide if they want to sign up for a yearly mess contract. The yearlyb rate for in-house mess is around NRS 72,000 (INR 45,000 or USD 720 per year) per student. There are also some cheaper options in and around campus that students prefer.
What is the general transportation cost like in Nepal?
Answer: Nepal is a cheap city to live in. Additionally, the Teaching Hospital and campus is just 5 minutes walk away making travelling during most of the times convenient and unnecessary. However, should you need to travel to the City Centre, bus and local transportation are available at the door-step. It will depend which mode of transport you use but it should not cost more than NRS 30- NRS 100 per day.
What extra charges will I incur during my studies?
Answer: Besides tution fees, accomodations and mess fees, students are subjected to various registration fees for KU, NMC and MOE. Additionally, a one-time feel is levied upon students for bed and bedding provided by the campus. students are also mandated to deposit a refundable security deposit fee during admissions that will be refunded to them when they finish their studies with us.
What scholarship opportunities are available for students at NMC?
Answer: Besides the 10 percent of the seats allotted to MOE students on scholarship basis, NMC also offers various academic scholarships that are available for students who do well academically within NMC. Am I allowed to work during my study period?
Answer: The MBBS course is very challenging and requires utmost dedication and concentration to grasp what is required. So working outside the field is not recommended to any students.. However, NMC does provide opportunities for students to work off the tuition fee by dedicating some hours on working for the college and hospital that is likely to allow students to gain vital skills for their future. Peer-student mentoring is an option for students who perform well academically. By tutoring junior students, such opportunity also allows the indiviual to receive waivers in their tuition fees.

How large is a typical class? What classes will I take?
Answer: Our yearly batch consists of 75 students. So, a typical lecture will have just as much students. Further on, during practical’s students will be separated in groups of 25 students. PBL classes a group of number of no more than 15 students who are assigned a single faculty to guide them.

Where exactly is NMC located? How is it like (weather, food, local places,etc)
Answer: NMC is located in the city of Nepal, which is the second largest city of Nepal. It is at the South-Eastern corner of Nepal and is a border town with Bihar, India. Travelling to Nepal is very easy with over 10 direct flights from Kathmandu daily and bus routes from all over Nepal. Additionally 5 kms from Nepal, right at the border is Jogbani Train Station that connects with most major towns of India, making commuting to and from Nepal very convenient.
What kind of housing is available for studnets? Do they have kitchens available?
Answer: We have a variety of options in terms of student accomodation. Please check accommodations availability here. Each accommodation is furnished differently and has separate facilities. Kitches are available in Studio apartment settings.
Is smoking allowed?
Answer: We have a strict no smoking policy on campus grounds. That includes the hostel and accommodation as well.

Are students allowed to bring their pets?
Answer: Unfortunately, No! While We at NMC are very passionate about animals, and would love to meet your pets but it is public area and not all people feel the same. Thus, we have a no pet’s policy in place at NMC. We have however our on-campus residing cows, dogs, sheep and goats that do make for one friendly environment.
What kind of fitness facilities is available for student?
Answer: For the physically active students, NMC organizes yearly sports tournament where team sports at varying levels compete. The colleges Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball teams are formed from Year Batch and compete with each other. Additionally, teams take part in tournaments organized by other medical schools around the country. NMC is also a registered member of the local gym where students get discounts for joining fitness clubs.
Can I have my parents stay in the campus when they come visit me?
Answer: We do have a guest house for our visitors that can be made available for the parents of enrolled students that wish to stay for a day or two. However, these guest rooms are usually packed. So, students are advised to book in advance and/or consult with Mr. Ganesh Subedi for availability.
Do I need to bring my own Computer?
Answer: This is probably the most obvious and easy thing on this list to recommend. Universities offer a vast range of services online, from checking exam results to accessing reading materials and event details, so having a computer is essential. Given the likelihood that you will be travelling between lectures, working on group project, working in the library or even just getting out of the house, having something you can carry around with you is paramount. However, it is also true that laptops are expensive, and there are a huge range to choose from that could probably take up a guide on their own. So understanding what academic works will be done will help you understand the specs you will need.
Do I need Health Insurance?
Answer: Medical students enrolled in our MBBS course are automatically eligible for health insurance at our Teaching Hospital. Students are advised to present their student ID when paying for the service bills. Following the payment of such bills, students are then required to submit the bills to the accounts department, where amount covered by the insurance is credited to the student’s account.
Where do students do their clinical rounds?
Answer: We have two hospitals as part of the teaching college where students will be allotted to for clinical rounds. On-site community hospital is a 350 bedded tertiary care hospital that will act as a pre-requisite for most of the clinical postings for all the departments. Additionally, a 350 bedded multi-specialty hospital with a rich history of over two decades, Birat Nursing Home Unit, will act as a site for sub-specialty base for clinical rotations for NMC students.
How long is the internship duration?
Answer: It is a compulsory 1 year internship following a 4.5 years MBBS course
Is intership compulsory for International students as well?
Answer: Yes, it is. All MBBS students studying in Nepal follow the same rules.
How many seats are allocated for International Students?
Answer: We have 30 seats each year allocated to International Students. These seats can be filled by Nepali students if eligible International Students are not selected.
What is your policy regarding the use of agents? Do you have any that you endorse officially?
Answer: Considering all information’s are available at this website, and direct contact is more convenient, we see no sense in having an agent representing students. However, if some students are more comfortable with agents, we do advise not dealing in finances with them.
Do I need to apply for visa? How much does it cost? Where can I get more information about visa processing?
Answer: Depending where you come from visa may or may not be required. Students from India are not required a visa to study in Nepal. Other International students may require a visa, for which following an application to us, we will be providing full information on how to apply for students visa and what help we will be providing.
Can I stay back and practice in Nepal after I graduate?
Answer: If you are on a student visa, there are rules preventing you from staying back and practicing medicine without license. If you are interested in doing so, we will be guiding you through the process if and when required.
Do you have any financial aids available for International students?
Answer: Yes, certain academic scholarships following academic excellence are available for International students. Follow the Available Scholarships to see if you are eligible for any of them.
